Why Capital Campaign Branding and Messaging Matter More Than Ever in Higher Education
The strongest advancement campaigns help donors visualize the outcomes their support can make possible.
By Paul Peterson
The past few years haven’t been easy for higher education or the teams tasked with engagement and advancement. Declining enrollment, uncertainty in public funding and a shrinking number of high school graduates are intensifying the competition for students (and donations). At the same time, the percentage of Americans who agree that a college degree is “very important” has fallen sharply — from 75% in 2010 to only 35% in 2025.
These challenges require clarity, consistency and a message that can rise above the noise. A successful capital campaign no longer depends solely on institutional reputation or alumni loyalty; donors want to understand what their support will accomplish and why it matters now. Effective campaign communications help donors connect emotionally with institutional priorities and see themselves in the impact those priorities can create.
Communicate With Clear Intention and Impact
Donors give primarily to organizations they feel personally connected to, and they value transparency and measurable impact more than ever. If your campaign’s purpose isn’t immediately clear, potential supporters may disengage before they fully understand the opportunities being presented.
That challenge is especially important in higher education, where campaign priorities are often broad by necessity: student success, research innovation, campus growth, academic excellence. While these goals are meaningful internally, they can feel abstract externally unless institutions translate them into visible human outcomes.
For example, it’s easy to say that your campus community is distinctive or that your institution offers a strong faculty-to-student ratio. But articulating real value requires specificity. Compared with thousands of other higher education institutions, what stories demonstrate why your community is worth investing in.
Instead of simply highlighting smaller class sizes, show donors how mentorship relationships changed the trajectory of a first-generation student’s education. Rather than promoting a renovated facility as a standalone achievement, connect that space to the research breakthroughs, student experiences or community partnerships it now makes possible.
Rather than framing a campaign around what the university hopes to achieve, strong advancement communications help donors visualize the role they can play in shaping that future. That subtle change can make campaign goals feel significantly more immediate and personal.
Case Study: Northern Arizona University Advancement | Foundation
Before the public launch of its $300 million comprehensive campaign, Elevate, NAU Advancement | Foundation partnered with C/A to come up with a compelling, audience-focused strategy designed to strengthen donor engagement and build long-term momentum.
The work began with stakeholder interviews, audience definition and a creative audit to identify the messaging and visual positioning that would resonate most effectively with prospective supporters. From there, the team developed a cohesive messaging framework, storytelling pillars and a visual identity system.
The resulting campaign materials helped translate broad institutional priorities into more focused donor-friendly narratives. A flagship 16-page brochure served as a polished print centerpiece for outreach, while accompanying one-sheeters highlighted giving opportunities across nine specific areas of the university, including individual colleges and the university’s library.
The campaign website further reinforces those priorities by organizing giving opportunities around four central campaign initiatives, supported by stories of student impact, academic innovation and community outcomes.
The success of the campaign has far exceeded expectations, including the rate and amount of money raised at the early stage of the effort.
